We are now almost a month into the new year and are approaching this fresh start with renewed energy! 2017 was a tremendously busy year not just for us, but for our industry as a whole.
In Manitoba, the trucking industry took some significant leaps forward, thanks in part to our friends at the Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA). An industry sector council was finally developed to represent our interests as an industry as well as give us a platform to discuss the challenges and concerns moving forward.
One of the biggest challenges facing our industry now is the shortage of qualified drivers. Over the past 10 years, MPI’s Entry Level Professional Truck Driver Program was instrumental in providing this industry with well-trained and professional drivers. This ground-breaking program will be coming to an end soon after funding 562 drivers with 100% tuition.
Fortunately, the Province of Manitoba will be continuing this funding with a new policy for subsidizing truck driver training. As of January 1st of this year, full tuition funding will be made available to Manitobans interested in training to become a professional truck driver!
TransX is in support of this initiative and plan on participating later this Spring once it rolls out. Stay tuned for more details.
